Some time ago I saw a video of Will Wright introducing his new game Spore that was still in development. I was really blown away by it and have been looking forward to its release. Briefly, it's a bizarre but hugely attractive game that gives you the power to play God in the sense that you are able to sdesign a creature that is then released in to a vast and complex virtual world. The challenge is to design a creature that will, be able to adapt to, survive and flourish within this world. Find out more about Spore here.
Have a quick look at a demo:
What do you think? Superb eh?
Even better news for me is that Spore is coming out for the Nintendo DS so guess what I'll be playing on my train journeys very soon?! Very keen to get my hands on this in terms of the fun aspect obviously but I am so taken with the idea of this game in relation to how it could be used within the context of Biology classes. What better way to appreciate Darwinism and the idea of 'survival of the fittest' than through the experience of designing your own being and watching how it evolves...
This looks amazing and will be a welcome edition to my rapidly growing DS collection. There is also huge potential for creative writing here.

Without doubt Ollie. What about the scope for discussion, collaboration and shared learning through a context such as this? This is an application that we need to have a closer look at. A visit to the Consolarium by your good self may be required in order for us to do this?!;-)

Sounds great Derek - anything in the name of education research! PS: Managed to save a few trauma centre victims tonight, although I am still classed a junior doctor!
