Along with a bus load of computer games design students from University Of Derby, (and an uber capitalist ;-)) I attended the New Statesman sponsored round table discussion on the Thursday night of the Hand to Eye conference.
Mt attempts to enter the fray with a question were unsuccessful as I wasn't chosen to speak!!! However, I'm not bitter but the questions were very serious and the some of the answers were very long....
The creator of Oddworld, Lorne Lanning was there and I wanted to take issue with a comment he made. In discussing the relative merits of one game against another he compared war movies and argued, metaphorically speaking, that for example Rambo would be a poor game/movie and that Apocalypse Now would be a killer game/movie. I was incensed because to me Rambo is a work of deep metaphysical genius that decontructs the turmoils and challenges faced by a war veteran who speaks with his mouth full. Lorne, I think you need to revisit that work!
I ws going to tell the panel of my experience coming down on the plane from Edinburgh. I was playing Trauma Centre and whilst doing this I removed polyps from a rock singers throat and saved his career. If only I'd played this earlier I may have chosen a different career path... I am clearly cut out to be a surgeon!
I wanted to ask if the panel thought that games could play a role in the careers service and which game may have influnenced them to have chosen a different career path. Alas, we'll never know...
